I roll my IT band all the time…should I stop?
A: One thing is true. The culprit of tension in your ITB usually comes from TFL and Gluteus maximus being too tight. They both insert on the ITB. Hence, rolling on these muscles too (ball or roller). But the reason behind this is probably gluteus medius weakness, so you have to address that too. We think rolling on the ITB is part of the solution to permit some gliding in between the vastus lateralis of the quads and the ITB and reduce tension at the knee quickly (ITB syndrome for example). But, just rolling the ITB is not the solution for an ITB that is too tought!
